“Every year the
women of New York leave the past behind and look forward to the future…this is known as
Fashion Week.”
--Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City
Last week from
September 10th – 17th marked the start of the
yearly event that fashionistas from all over anxiously await. It’s Fashion Week! Where designers both old and new showcased their
Spring/Summer 2016 collections. Kicking
off in New York, the runway included fashions from Tom Ford, Balenciaga, The
Academy of Art, and Yeezy himself, Kayne West.
A lot of designers featured bomber jackets, capes on dresses, jackets
and blouses, stripes, off-the-shoulder tops and fringed hems. The most talked about show was from Givenchy’s Artistic Director
Ricardo Tisci. Honoring the losses from
the tragic events of 9/11, he used a backdrop of New York City showcasing his collection. Fashion week will continue in London (Sept. 18th- Sept. 22nd), Milan (Sept. 23rd - Sept. 29th) and ending in Paris (Sept. 30th- Oct. 6th).
Whether it’s in New York,
London, Milan or Paris, Fashion Week is a platform for designers to express
themselves and make statements. “Collections”
is a group of ideas
transformed into materials, in which we call clothes that allow individuality.
The power can be overwhelming, shocking, and brilliant as seen by designers
such as Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Vivian Westwood and the debut collection
by Brandon Maxwell.
